Plenty of catchers have gone into managing. The experience that comes with calling a game from behind the plate, working with catchers, and getting a full season's worth of at bats often lends itself to become a manager. In the big leagues today, Joe Girardi, Bruce Bochy, Fredi Gonzalez, Mike Scioscia, Mike Redmond, Mike Matheny, Clint Hurdle, Brad Ausmus, Ned Yost, Bob Melvin, Joe Maddon, and John Gibbons were all catchers before heading into managing.
Former Phillies catcher Brian Schneider hopes to join those ranks, reports Chase Hughes of CSN Washington. The life-long Phillies fan Schneider will be manager of the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads, a Miami Marlins affiliate that plays in the Florida State League with the Clearwater Threshers.
Schneider grew up in the Lehigh Valley and reached his dream of playing for the Phillies by serving as Carlos Ruiz's backup from 2010 through 2012.
