My guess is that the Hamels camp and the Phillies camp were too far apart to ink a multiyear deal. They obviously want the talks to continue on a healthy level, and arbitration might put a rift between the two. It is clear that Hamels and the Phillies want to both stay together. Signing a one year extension gives them another year to work things out peacefully in the best interest of both parties.
