I hope they dont sign Hellickosn to some ludicrous multi year deal. The dude is a 4/5 who happens to be having a good season.

Why can't they compete in 2017?
We have our rotation:
Vinny, Nola, Thompson, Eickhoff and Eflin with depth options in the minors (Lively and Pivetta) in case of injury
We have a stellar young bullpen with Neris, Edubray Ramos, and Dalier Hinojosa (who is inexplicably at AAA right now)
Knapp is ready to go, Franco and Odubel are already great major leaguers, Cesar and Altherr and Joseph are finally coming into their own and Alfaro, Crawford and others are not far behind.
I would trade Jeanmar Gomez and Cameron Rupp in the offseason, let Neris take the closers role coming out of ST and re-up Chooch to help ease Alfaro into the catchers rrole when he's ready and then go into the season with Joseph and Knapp (both solid hitters) splitting time at first. We won't be the Cubs, but we can at least be a wild card contender considering we are only marginally outside of competition at this point (not saying that we can make it in 2016,) but the fact that our guys are gaining more experience is definitely solid and could help us be like the 2006 or 2007 team
